Naib Subedar (Retd) Dharam Singh, #VirChakra was all of 18 when he was recognized for his act of valour on 4 October 1965. Today, 51 years on, he is settled in Amritsar and proud that he has done something for the country.

On October 4, 1965, a company in which then Sepoy Dharam Singh was serving was ordered to clear an encroachment on a feature near Kalidhar in Jammu and Kashmir, which had been made by Pakistani forces notwithstanding the ceasefire. When its advance was held up due to a minefield, he volunteered to lead the way. During the counter-attack, he killed two enemy soldiers.

He received his gallantry award from President Zakir Hussain in 1968 at the age of 24.
