During World War I, he did something remarkable\u2014he became one of the first turbaned Sikhs to serve in the US Army. Imagine that, Nini! He wore his turban and kept his beard, proudly representing his culture.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Legal_Battle\"><\/span>The Legal Battle<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>&#8220;But Bhagat Singh Thind&#8217;s battle didn&#8217;t end on the battlefield,&#8221; Grandpa continued, his voice growing solemn. &#8220;After the war, he faced a different kind of fight\u2014a legal one. You see, Nini, there were unfair laws that didn&#8217;t allow people like him to become American citizens. Even though he had served the country, he was denied citizenship because of these discriminatory laws.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Supreme_Court_Case\"><\/span>The Supreme Court Case<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>&#8220;Bhagat Singh Thind took his case all the way to the Supreme Court, the highest court in the land. In 1923, the court ruled against him. They said he wasn&#8217;t a &#8216;white person,&#8217; even though he argued that he was of Aryan origin. This decision was a big blow, not just for him, but for many other South Asian immigrants. It showed how deeply rooted racial prejudice was.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Commemorating_a_Milestone\"><\/span>Commemorating a Milestone<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>&#8220;Ninety-five years later,&#8221; Grandpa said, &#8220;people still remembered his struggle. The South Asian Bar Association in Washington, DC, held a special event to mark the anniversary of his court case. He finally became a US citizen in 1936 after many years of legal battles. He believed that Sikhism could be the future religion of mankind and left a lasting impact on his students and followers.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"An_Enduring_Example\"><\/span>An Enduring Example<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>&#8220;Even after he passed away, his legacy lived on,&#8221; Grandpa said softly. &#8220;His son, David Bhagat Thind, made sure his father&#8217;s story was remembered. He created a website to keep his memory alive. In times like these, when there are still struggles against discrimination, Bhagat Singh Thind&#8217;s story reminds us of the importance of standing up for what&#8217;s right.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Grandpa looked at Nini with a gentle smile. &#8220;So, you see, Nini, Bhagat Singh Thind&#8217;s story is a powerful reminder that one person&#8217;s courage and determination can make a big difference.
