His father, Karam Si\u1e45gh, was a farmer of modest means and could not afford to send him to a school in town. So Atar Si\u1e45gh was apprenticed to Bh\u00e2\u00ee B\u00fb\u1e6d\u00e2 Si\u1e45gh, head of the Nirmal\u00e2 \u1e0der\u00e2 or monastery of Bh\u00e2\u00ee R\u00e2m Si\u1e45gh, in his own village. He acquired proficiency in the Sikh religious texts and also read philosophical treatises such as the Vich\u00e2r S\u00e2gar. Side by side with his progress in Sikh learning, he developed a deeply religious cast of mind.
