Her journey from a small village in Punjab to one of the highest judicial positions in Canada is truly remarkable.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Family_Background\"><\/span>Family Background<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Palbinder Kaur comes from a distinguished background. Her father, Gian Singh Sandhu, was an ex-Indian Air Force (IAF) personnel. She is married to Amritpal Singh, who hails from Jagatpur village in the Nawanshahr district. The couple has three children \u2013 a daughter and two sons.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Education_and_Legal_Career\"><\/span>Education and Legal Career<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>She pursued her law degree at the University of Saskatchewan and later gained recognition for her outstanding contributions to the legal field.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Historic_Appointment_as_a_Judge\"><\/span>Historic Appointment as a Judge<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Palbinder Kaur Shergill made history by becoming the first turbaned Sikh woman judge in Canada\u2019s Supreme Court. Her appointment was a proud moment for the Sikh community worldwide.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Notable_Achievements_and_Contributions\"><\/span>Notable Achievements and Contributions<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Queen\u2019s Counsel Recognition:<\/strong> In 2012, she was honored with the title of Queen\u2019s Counsel, a prestigious designation given to lawyers for their exceptional contributions.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Landmark Legal Cases:<\/strong> Since 1991, she has represented the World Sikh Organisation (WSO) in the Supreme Court, including defending Sikh students&#8217; right to wear the kirpan in Canadian schools.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Extensive Legal Experience:<\/strong> With vast trial and appellate experience, she has appeared before multiple courts and tribunals across Canada.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Community Service Award:<\/strong> She is a recipient of the Queen\u2019s Golden Jubilee Medal, recognizing her dedication to community service.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Passions_Beyond_Law\"><\/span>Passions Beyond Law<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Palbinder Kaur is not just a brilliant lawyer but also a person of diverse talents. She holds a black belt in karate, enjoys playing volleyball, and has a deep love for music.
