Representing Malaysia on a global stage was a significant milestone in his journey.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Representing_Malaysia_at_a_UN_Conference\"><\/span>Representing Malaysia at a UN Conference<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Now a commissioner at the Malaysia Competition Commission (MyCC), Jagjit was honored to attend the Intergovernmental Group of Experts on Competition Law and Policy meeting, organized by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) from July 5 to July 7. Reflecting on his journey, he felt immense gratitude for the opportunities he received.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Family_Roots_and_Early_Struggles\"><\/span>Family Roots and Early Struggles<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Jagjit is the third of six siblings. His late father, Bant Singh, served as a watchman at Jabatan Kerja Raya (JKR) in Johor Bahru, while his mother, Pritam Kaur, was a homemaker. His family remained deeply connected to Johor Bahru, where his parents lived until their passing.<\/p>\n<p>Despite facing hardships, Jagjit attributes his success to his parents\u2019 dedication and Guru Ji\u2019s blessings. His appointment as a magistrate in 1988 was a proud moment for his family.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"A_Legacy_of_Excellence_in_the_Family\"><\/span>A Legacy of Excellence in the Family<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>His siblings have also made remarkable achievements. His eldest brother, Dr. Jarnail Singh, and fourth sibling, Dr. Harbans Singh, run private medical practices in Johor Bahru. Younger brother Jasbeer Singh retired as a JKR technician, while his two sisters, Harbans Kaur and Rajinder Kaur, settled in the UK after marriage.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Fathers_Recognition_and_State_Honor\"><\/span>Father\u2019s Recognition and State Honor<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Jagjit\u2019s father, Bant Singh, was awarded the Pingat Ibrahim Sultan by the Johor Sultan for his dedicated service to the state. Jagjit recalls the proud moment when he personally drove his father to the palace for the honor.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"A_Distinguished_Legal_Career\"><\/span>A Distinguished Legal Career<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Holding a Bachelor of Laws (Hons) and a Master\u2019s in Law from King\u2019s College, London, Jagjit dedicated 38 years to Malaysia\u2019s judicial and legal service. His roles included:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Magistrate<\/li>\n<li>Senior Federal Counsel<\/li>\n<li>Assistant Parliamentary Draftsman<\/li>\n<li>Deputy Treasury Solicitor<\/li>\n<li>Legal Advisor to the Ministry of Health<\/li>\n<li>Deputy Public Prosecutor<\/li>\n<li>Sessions Court Judge in Kuantan, Seremban, and Kuala Lumpur<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Championing_Public_Health_and_Legal_Reform\"><\/span>Championing Public Health and Legal Reform<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>As a Sikh, Jagjit was particularly proud of drafting Malaysia\u2019s No Smoking laws during his tenure as Legal Advisor to the Ministry of Health. Smoking is considered one of the four Bajar Kurehat (forbidden actions) in Sikhism.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Accomplishments_Beyond_the_Judiciary\"><\/span>Accomplishments Beyond the Judiciary<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Jagjit is the founding partner of Jagjit Ariff &amp; Co, specializing in criminal and preventive detention law. He has also authored two books:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Practical Approach to the Enforcement of Intellectual Property Rights<\/li>\n<li>Civil Procedure<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Following his retirement, he was appointed as an Independent Director at Tokio Marine Insurans Bhd and recently joined the Football Association of Malaysia\u2019s (FAM) appeal board, led by Johor Crown Prince Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim (TMJ).<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"An_Inspiring_Journey_of_Hard_Work_and_Dedication\"><\/span>An Inspiring Journey of Hard Work and Dedication<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Jagjit Singh\u2019s rise from humble beginnings to representing Malaysia on an international platform is a testament to perseverance, dedication, and the values instilled by his family.
