7 years ago I was alcohol dependent, diet was mainly meat and I very rarely went to the Gurdwara Sahib. I made every excuse not to go. Drinking affected my life in every way. My health suffered. My family suffered. My parents in India were worried.
The turning point for me was when I was at my lowest point and I felt like I had no where to turn. It was a Thursday evening and I was meeting someone at the Gurdwara Sahib. He was running late and I went into the kitchen for a cup of tea. There were people doing kitchen sewa who asked me to give them a hand. I helped them and that was the beginning. I felt needed and I came back week after week to do kitchen sewa. I then started helping with parshad sewa. With the help and support of the Guru and the Sangat I chose to keep around me, I started to grow my hair, stop drinking and became a vegetarian.
By the end of that year I had taken Amrit. I now read Bhog De Salok with the Granthi Singhs every Sunday. I do the Arthi and Artha. It took me 7 years and I have now become the President of the Guru Nanak Gurdwara South Birmingham Sparkhill.
