Local lad Zorawar Singh, 19, won the gold medal in the 10-metre air rifle shooting (team event) at the All India Inter University Shooting Championship held at Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi, between January 9 and 14.

Zorawar is student of BA-2 at Malwa College. He is practising air rifle shooting for three years. Zorawar said he practices for three hours daily at a private shooting range. He had also won the silver medal at the national school shooting championship at Pune in 2013 and bronze medal at Punjab State Shooting Championship in 2014.

Zorawar got selected in the three-member Punjabi University’s air rifle shooting team for participation in the inter-university event through trials held Punjabi University in December 2015. Besides Zorawar, the other team members were Harmanvir Singh and Ekambir Singh of Punjabi University.

Zorawar belongs to a family of sportspersons. He is the grandson of Baldev Singh Brar, an international level athlete and Kabaddi player. Barar held the discus throw event record of Indian Railways for 20 years and had also set the record in discus throw at the inter-university event in year 1959 representing Panjab University.

Zorawar’s father Kanwal Preet Singh Brar had also participated in athletics events at international level and was the first student of Government Rajindra College to win the gold medal at all India inter-university athletics championship in discus throw in 1983.
