23 May 1948, Jemadar Hardev Singh while in command of a platoon patrol at Machhoi in J&K, came under intense enemy fire, killing or wounding many of his men. He himself was grievously wounded. Disregarding his personal safety he got all his wounded men to the nearest cover and kept the enemy engaged till reinforcement arrived. For displaying exemplary leadership and bravery posthumously awarded Mahavir Chakra.
