Yesterday When Mumbai was being hit by torrential rains, Sikh Volunteers came to the rescue of stranded passengers at the Dadar station. They earned the respect of hungry struck Mumbaikars who were served langar at the overcrowded station.

The volunteers of the Gurdwara fed passengers who were present at the station and couldn’t make it home for dinner.
Whole day media was running news on Mumbai rains, but no one bothered to cover this news.

A heartwarming gesture that shows humanity can conquer any problem and it is greater than any religion.

Sikhs don’t do social service for getting into the limelight, but it is necessary to reach those people who make fun of Sikhs.

This is a morning Raag.

Bhagat Kabeer ji says….

Ang 1349:

First light was created, then The Lord made mortals. From one light the entire universe welled up….Bhagat ji asks …then who is to say who is good and who is bad?

So in this painting there is a central spark of light….from which radiate ….

the colors of the rainbow in both directions….

Understanding that the is divinity within each one of us.

All of us are made in the colors of Divine Love… Each one is divine so who can judge …who is good or bad?

A message of brotherhood…with no judgements….

Guru Ram Das ji

Ang 1325 begs….

You are the ocean ….I am Your fish… Please be kind…. Keep me always with You.

this painting is shows a solitary fish in the water…sea weeds growing around.

I want to share the thought that the journey towards the Guru is a very individual and personal one. No parent, no sibling or no child can help to save me. This journey IS to be travelled alone. I have come alone and I will depart alone….

Therefore I painted a solitary fish in this painting….
Like the fish is one with the ocean….keep me with You O Lord…

20 Yr Old Iknoor Singh Wins the Battle for practicing Religious Freedom while serving in the US Army!

A Sikh student from New York is all excited about a federal court decision that allows him to enroll himself as well as other Sikhs in the U.S. Army’s Reserve Officer Training Corps without compromising on their articles of faith. U.S. District Court Judge Amy Berman Jackson remarked that 20-year-old Iknoor Singh’s adherence to his religious beliefs would not restrict his ability to serve in the army.

“It was kind of surreal for something I have been fighting for two or three years. I’m excited and nervous; very excited to learn.” reported Iknoor.

Singh has had a lifelong interest in public service. He is well versed in four languages — English, Punjabi, Hindi, and Urdu — and he aspires to work in military intelligence.

“Becoming an officer is not an easy thing, You have to be proficient in many areas!” he conceded. Remaining firm on his faith he said “Once a Sikh gets rid of his hair and his beard, it’s in direct violation of his faith. You lose what God has given to you,”

Under a policy announced last year, troops can seek waivers on a case-by-case basis to wear religious clothing, seek prayer time or engage in religious practices. Approval depends on where the service member is stationed and whether the change would affect military readiness or the mission.

Currently, only a few Sikhs serve in the U.S. Army who has been granted religious accommodations. Army spokesman, Lt. Col. Ben Garrett, said in a statement the decision is currently being examined. “The Army takes pride in sustaining a culture where all personnel are treated with dignity and respect and not discriminated against based on race, color, religion, gender and national origin,” he said.

The senior staff attorney for the Sikh Coalition, Gurjot Kaur said the decision was “An Important Victory in the Fight for Religious Freedom. We urge the Pentagon to eliminate the discriminatory loopholes in its policies and give all Americans an equal opportunity to serve in our nation’s armed forces.”

Hofstra spokeswoman Karla Schuster said in a statement that the university “supports Mr. Singh’s desire to serve his country, as well as his right to religious expression and practice. We are pleased that the courts have affirmed that he can do both as a member of the ROTC.”

Hard Work bore Fruit! Sikh Families come together and turn 300 acres parched land into an Orchard in Tamil Nadu!

Amid a massive spread of ‘kattu karuvai’ (Prosopis juliflora) in Kamudhi block, one of the driest parts of the district, lies an oasis, ‘Akaal Farm’, developed by Himachal Pradesh-based Kalgidhar Trust. After a bumpy drive on the three-km-long metal road from Abiramam, about 80 km from here, opens an iron gate to the lush green horticulture farm at Vallandhai in Kamudhi block.

From Moga district in Punjab to Vallandhai, four Sikh families, comprising about 20 members, have come a long way to develop the about 300 acres of fallow land into an orchard.

“We bought the lands in 2007 and it took three years to remove the shrubs and develop the area for plantation,” supervisors Sarbajit Singh (56) and Darshan Singh (46) explained at the farm.

They came all the way from Punjab on the direction of Baba Iqbal Singh who headed the Trust. The former Director of Agriculture, Himachal Pradesh, said that there were plenty of fallow lands in south Tamil Nadu and directed them, the Sikhs in his congregation, to explore cultivation, as they visited this part of the area.

Acting under his leadership, the families pooled in money and bought the lands at the rate of Rs. 20,000 per acre as the local farmers turned skeptical about the fertility of the land and sold them at throwaway prices.

The local farmers now envy the Sikhs. The irony was that some of the farmers — said Syed Segana, retired Village Administration Officer of Abiramam — are now working on the farm as employed workers.

The local people were hostile to the Sikhs in the beginning but have become friendly now, he said.

“Our hard work literally bore fruit,” the Sikhs said, displaying the apple-sized ‘Lucknow 49’ species of guava, developed in about 40 acres and Alphonso, a popular mango variety, and the prized Imam Pasand, on about 60 acres.

They also cultivated cucumber, pumpkin and watermelon as inter-crop last year and harvested about 20 tonnes of watermelon and 12 tonnes of pumpkin. They were harvesting two tonnes of cucumber daily now. Their mangoes sold like hot cakes in Madurai and Bangalore.

They dug 15 bore wells and installed drip irrigation for judicious use of water. They also established an Aamla farm on 40 acres and grew timber-valued trees on about five acres. They now propose to expand their mango and guava farms.

During Guru Gobind Singh Ji’s Diwan, Guru Sahib did benti to Bhai Daya Singh Ji to take the Chaur sahib away from the Singh who was doing Chaur sahib sewa.

The Singh was really upset that Guru Sahib had taken his sewa away so he asked Guru Ji “Why did u take the sewa away from me, I’m heartbroken?”

Guru Sahib said you have broken ‘my’ heart by taking away what I blessed you with. On reflection, that morning the Singh had seen a white hair in his beard and plucked it out because he didn’t want people to see it.

If Guru Sahib Loves ’1′ hair that much, imagine how he must feel when his beloved Sikhs do Kes beadbi.

The ideal time to recite this raag is in the evening hours…

This raag is said to have its origins in southern India.

Guru Ramdas ji says:

Ang 1294
The mind roams and rambles in all directions. Meeting the holy the mind is brought under control. Then Guru ji gives the example…. Just as the fisherman spreads his net over the water, he overpowers and catches the fish. ….meeting with the holy, the mind’s vices are brought under control.

In this painting…

The five fish are representing the five vices within …lust, anger, greed, worldly attachment and ego.
Just as the fisherman’s net catches the fish, in the same way Guru ji tells us that the net of good company subdues and controls these five vices within.

The curling waters around the fish…suggest a struggle….like the fish, the vices within do not give up so quickly. The waves around the fish suggest this internal struggle before the vices within can be brought under control.

The Guru gives advice to consider the importance of good SANGAT….good company.
