Akal Academy, Basarke has been built by the family of Dr Navjeet Kaur and Dr Gurcharan Singh, USA in memory of their elder; Dr Kharag Singh Sachdeva, who incidentally was the first Principal of Punjab’s oldest premier Medical Institute, Guru Gobind Singh Medical College, Faridkot. The blessed Doctor couple consistently endeavours to update the rural schools with new technology and recently they networked with Drexel University, Philadelphia to bring in their experts to the rural schools to impart Hygiene training to kids.

To control the problem of growing epidemic of tooth decay among children, delegates from Drexel University, USA visited & conducted a Workshop on ‘Oral Hygiene & Health’ at Akal Academy, Basarke (in memory of Dr Kharag Singh Sachdeva Ji).

Students of the Academy presented a small program, which included Shabad Kirtan, Rhymes, Skit and Spectacular Gatka performances in order to welcome the foreign delegates warmly.

The workshop focused mainly on Oral health problems and how to overcome them. The visiting faculty was exhilarated with the vibrant performances displayed by the rural kids. It was a great learning experience & interaction session for the students as they learnt a lot about Dental Care.

The experts presented a demonstration on how to brush teeth properly, and added that severe tooth decay is reported among children as young as three and in many cases is starting much earlier. Toothpaste & Toothbrushes were distributed to each student.

Stating that responsibility of Oral health should be undertaken by schools and community by expanding Oral Health education in curriculum, this can drastically help in reducing dental decay and ultimately improve the oral health of the rural population.

SHARE and Applaud the efforts!
