It is an inescapable irony that the man leading the delivery of Waterloo Region’s ION LRT commutes every day from Brampton, a city that recently rejected a provincially funded LRT down its main street.

When Darshpreet Bhatti isn’t obsessing over the details of light rail, he is dreaming of the heavy rail that would transform his daily trip to work.

He can’t wait until the province delivers the two-way, all-day GO service that would free him from the daily drive between his home and the region offices in Kitchener.

It will be a few years before GO trains are running there in the morning. But given that Bhatti’s wife teaches at a school walking distance from their home, he doesn’t expect to be moving closer to the office any time soon.

His commute ranges from 70 minutes in the summer to upwards of two hours in winter. A lot of that car time is spent on the phone — hands-free, of course — catching up with colleagues, particularly now that he’s so often out on the LRT route checking the construction that precedes the laying of rails.

“Keeping everyone focused is perhaps the biggest challenge,” he says of his role as rapid transit director.

“Big projects, you always have ups and downs and I have to make sure the staff that are working diligently on this — more than the average job — are fully focused, are passionate about it, are motivated to do it day in and day out until the project is done,” he said.
Just because he drives a car to work, doesn’t mean Bhatti, 36, can’t relate to those who, by choice or necessity, use transit.

He remembers relying on Mississauga’s bus system to get to the subway at Islington Station when he was studying engineering at U of T. It instilled in him the belief that reliability — followed by frequency — trumps all other attributes when it comes to transit.

“As a student you’re not always as punctual so you know you’re late for your lecture. But if the bus doesn’t come on time you’ll definitely miss it,” he said.

The same applies whether you’re a worker or just running an errand, said Bhatti. Cost and comfort are important but they are secondary.

“You want a system that you can rely on. If it says five minutes you want the bus to be there in five minutes or you want the train to be there in five minutes,” he said.

Bhatti has already been involved in the planning and execution of virtually every mode of transportation, from bike lanes and widening highways to light rail.

Before joining Waterloo in 2008, he worked as a consultant on projects around the Toronto region including with the Toronto Waterfront Revitalization Corp., the TTC on the St. Clair streetcar right-of-way and the first Ottawa LRT plan that was subsequently killed by that city.

After consulting, Bhatti was hired by Oshawa where he worked on the widening of Highway 401 and options for moving the GO line to the north side of the 401 — something that hasn’t happened.

Leading the ION project has been a long series of highs and lows, he says — from the uncertainty of approvals by four levels of government to the victory of winning over a skeptical public.

“We went through years of discussing what is the right choice for this project in terms of technology. Getting consensus from the public at large — saying this is the right project and supporting the work you have done — is a pretty major milestone in my mind.”
Five things to know about the LRT

1. Each stop on the ION LRT will have a unique identifying piece of art or feature wall using different treatments and finishes that reflect the neighbourhood.

2. The light rail vehicles will operate in their own lane, separated from car and truck traffic for enhanced reliability.

3. LRT stops will be integrated with new and existing development wherever possible to encourage riders to choose transit and reward nearby businesses with foot traffic.

4. Stops will be well lit with canopies to shelter riders, and will include route and next vehicle arrival information.

5. A perforated yellow strip along the platforms will help guide and protect riders with visual disabilities.

Comedians Gurpreet Singh Ghuggi and Sunil Pal have joined the campaign that seeks a ban on Sikhs jokes. Actor Manmeet Singh, RJ O P Rathore and Church of North India (CNI) have also come out in support of the ban.

“The history of Sikh jokes goes back to the British era, as names like Santa and Banta were common those days. They were troubled by the martial race led and Maharaja Ranjit Singh had given them a tough time. That is why an attempt was made to defame Sikhs and I wonder why this trend started by them has not stopped,” said Ghuggi, who has featured in TV shows and Bollywood movies.

A global on-line petition started by Delhi Sikh community on change.org demanding a ban on Sikh jokes intended at ridiculing the community has gained momentum worldwide. This petition has more than 27,000 signatures online and around 45,000 signatures offline. “We expect to have 1, 00,000 signatures by the end of December 2015,” said Manjit Singh GK, president, Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee.

Charanjeet Singh, a spokesperson of DSGMC, said an online campaign started by the committee called for a ban on 5,000-odd websites that carry jokes which made fun of Sikhs like ’12 baj gaye’ and other taunts had got massive support from all sections of the society across the globe.

The thrust of the campaign is that Sikhs are the most vibrant, confident and generous community and these jokes “violate the fundamental right to life and to live with dignity,” and so the sites carrying them should be banned and install the filters to prevent them from making a re-entry.

DSGMC has also started an offline campaign during birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev at Gurdwara Rakabganj where the petition was put before Sikh masses and those who did not use internet were asked to join the campaign by signing on paper sheets. A record number of 20,000 offline signatures were gathered on one day with people unanimous of the need to stop racist jokes.

Hermehr Kaur wins the Prestigious Title of ‘Tennis Player of the Year’ at Redlands High School, US!

Hermehr Kaur has plastered her name all over the CIF-SS girls tennis postseason brackets for three straight seasons, reaching the round of 16 in 2015.

The Redlands High School junior advanced to the round of 16 as part of a doubles team two years ago, but this season was her deepest run as a singles player.

She didn’t lose until encountering eventual three-time CIF-SS individual champion, UCLA-bound senior Ena Shibahara of Palos Verdes Peninsula.

“When they see the same name three years in a row, she’s got that name recognition now,” Redlands coach Sean Comadena said of Kaur. “It’s like when the same school does well year after year. Hermehr has put herself in that position.”

Kaur went 37-2 in the regular season and won her second Citrus Belt League singles title in as many tries.
She lost just two games in the first three rounds of the playoffs before polishing off her round of 32 opponent with a 6-0 victory in the second set.

Once the 581 CIF-Southern Section schools are boiled down to 16 singles players, an elite group of players is all that’s left.

“At that point, it’s not really about high school anymore because we all see each other at national tournaments,” Kaur said. “It’s all girls that will be playing Division I tennis. Once you’re past the round of 32, that’s when it really begins.”

With three-time defending champion Shibahara graduating, the door is ajar for Kaur in 2016. Winning the CIF-SS individual tournament isn’t easy for anybody, but Kaur has landed herself in the conversation for next season.

“I very much think she could make it into the top eight and any one of those girls can win it,” Comadena said. “She works so hard at it that she’s giving herself a chance. Anybody needs a little luck to go their way to win the whole tournament but Hermehr is in the middle of that discussion.”

Her junior season may technically be over, but Kaur said there is plenty of work to be done to reach her next attainable goal. Kaur is hoping to land a Division I scholarship, something she will go a long way toward determining over the next few months.

“You know that time when seniors are applying for colleges and trying to put their best foot forward so they can get in,” Kaur said.

“That’s what I’ll be doing for tennis while I’m a junior. I’m going to be playing in a lot of tournaments in front of a lot of college coaches soon and they’re going to be choosing who they want to offer scholarships.”
