Rajbir Singh has no memories of his father and grandfather, except stories that have been passed on to him by his family.

One of the stories — about their deaths, is violent and gory but that is the one etched in his memory.

Rajbir was told that he was 11 months old in 1984, when a mob burnt his grandfather Kirpal Singh alive on the hand-drawn cart he used to hawk peanuts for a living.

When his disabled grandmother limped out to pull the body, lying in a heap of other bodies, the mob pushed her away. Then they dumped the bodies on a truck.

“Aaj bhi rongte khade ho jaate hain un kahaniyon se. (The hair-raising stories evoke horror even today),” says Rajbir, now 33, as he recalls the gruesome stories from the days when violence against Sikhs swept through Delhi and other parts of the country after the assassination of then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in 1984.

“Log bacchon ko raja-rani ki kahani sunate hain, humein yeh sab kahaniyan sunayi jati thi. (People tell stories of kings and queens to their children but we were told these stories),” he adds.

He was given detailed accounts of how his father, Modhu Singh, was the next to be killed. The mob — armed with iron rods, petrol cans and wooden sticks — entered the house and dragged out his father.

They doused him with petrol and burnt him alive.

Rajbir’s terrified mother dressed Rajbir and his elder brother in his sister’s clothes to save them. He recalls his grandmother telling him the chilling slogan used by the mob during the attack — “Saanp toh maar diye, saanpolon ko bhi maar do (Kill the children of the snakes as well).” He is one of the thousands of orphans of the carnage; the youngest of four siblings, all under the age of 10 at that time. While he was too young to remember the horrors of the violence, he has spent his lifetime in its shadow.

The family resided in Trilokpuri’s block 32 where almost 400 people were killed. Rajbir’s father was a porter at the Nizamuddin railway station, his earnings too meagre to send the children to school.

“Hum bahut chhote varg ke log the, par mere pita bahut bahadur the, ek sache Sikh ki tarah. (We were from a very poor background but my father was very brave like a real Sikh),” he says.

On the night of October 31, 1984, when violence first spread, Rajbir’s father did not come home, spending the night at the station. The next day he returned but by then the mob had reached his doorstep.

Rajbir’s mother begged her husband to cut his hair but he refused to part with an integral part of his faith. He told his wife, “Bach gaya toh tumhara, mar gaya toh Wahe Guru ka. (If I survive, then I am yours, if I die then I’m Wahe Guru’s).”

Rajbir now runs a cramped grocery and mobile recharge shop in a Tilak Vihar resettlement colony, in West Delhi. Picking up a photograph of his father from a shelf he says, “Look, he is so cute.”

All that he has left of his father are memories of the massacre, two photographs and a Rs 5 note. “That was his last earning which he gave my mother on the day he was killed. We have saved it carefully,” he says.

It was in 1986, after his mother got a grade IV government job that the children first went to school. But as they grew up, her earnings were not enough. He dropped out of school after class 10 to support the family. For several years, he worked as a mechanic, doing odd jobs.

During this time, Rajbir lost several friends when drug addiction spread among the young children of riot survivors. “Hum sab ke gwale chhin gaye the. Bahut log nahi sambhal paayein aur nashe mein pad gaye. Maine khud na jaane kitni laashein uthayi hain. (All our protectors were snatched away. Lots of young men could not deal with it and took to drugs. I have shouldered so many dead bodies).”

His marriage in 2005 and subsequent fatherhood made him less bitter, he says. In 2010, he opened the shop which he has been running since then. At one point, Rajbir’s three-year-old son walks in, asking for a packet of crisps. Losing his father meant that Rajbir can never say no to his children. His elder daughter is 10. Though painful, he wants his children to know everything that happened to their family.

What still rankles him though is the absence of accountability of those responsible. Cases against many accused including three Congress leaders — Sajjan Kumar, Jagdish Tytler and HKL Bhagat — have dragged on for years. Bhagat died in 2005.

“Just like Indira Gandhi’s death caused trauma to her family, the Sikh community suffered the loss of their sons. As a Sikh, I too am saddened by her killing. But if her killers could be given death penalty, then why were Congress leaders responsible for killing innocent Sikhs not punished?” he asks.

For the adult survivors, there are memories of husbands and fathers to live by, but Rajbir doesn’t have those. For the witnesses, there are legal battles to be fought for justice, but for a child who never knew his father, closure is never really an option.

How Guru Har Rai Ji took the ‘Prick the Needle’ test to bestow the Guruship among his two sons

One day when Baba Ram Rai and (Guru) Harkrishan Ji were sitting in a trance, a Sikh came and praising them said, “How the princes are engrossed in deep meditation! They have forgotten all worldly attachments and now have dyed themselves in the Name of God”. The Guru called for the Sikh and said. “If […]

“If you want the real situation of the princes then I give you this needle. Prick with this needle the hand of each prince and you will find who has been engrossed in deep meditation and who has been sitting just closing his eyes.”

That Sikh took the needle and he pricked the hand of Baba Ram Rai. Even on just touching the needle, Baba Ji became alert and he glared towards the Sikh angrily. Then he pricked the hand of (Guru) Harkrishan Ji, yet he did not move. He again pricked, but (Guru) Harkrishan again remained motionless. The Sikh was astonished to see a small boy in such a state of trance. Sri Guru Har Rai Sahib Ji was watching the entire show. From this he received the notion that Baba Ram Rai was just closing his eyes and was aware of everything happening outside but Guru Harkrishan Sahib Ji had gone in trance and was completely un-aware of the surroundings.

From this Guru Ji concluded that Baba Ram Rai was not serious towards the recitation of Bani, thus having two appearances. In his heart there was no love for God, but outwardly he was showing others that he was very much devoted to God. On another appraisal, Baba Ram Rai failed to impress the Guru. One day a Sikh came and asked the Guru that among his sons which was more dear to him. Guru Ji replied, “Parents love their children equally, for me even my Sikhs are my children and they are more dear to me, but as far my sons are concerned if you want to assess that who is more lovable then I tell you one method of estimation. I hand over you this needle. both of my sons are reciting the holy hymns sitting in their cradles. First you should listen to to the devotional songs recited by the princes. After this you shall pierce this needle into the pier of the cradle. In whose cradle’s pier this needle pierces easily consider that my loving son.”

Obeying the orders of the guru the Sikh rached near the cradle of Baba Ram Rai. He stayed there and heard the recitation of the holy hymns. Baba Ram Rai was reciting Gurbani by placing his gutka (breviary) on the cradle. After hearing the devitonal songs for some time the Sikh tried to pierce the needle into the pier of the cradle, but the wood was so hard that the needle failed to prick it. He tried very hard but all in vain. Then he went near the cradle of (Guru) Harkrishan Ji. He was reciting hymns in a very sweet voice. The Sikh was mesmerized to hear the sweet voice of (Guru) Harkrishan Ji and he stayed there for a long time to enjoy the celestial bliss. He even forgot the whole purpose to which he had gone there. When Guru Har Rai Ji called for him he remembered his task.

Then he tried to pierce the needle in the pier of the cradle. He was astonished to see that the needle pierced into the wooden pier as if it was made of wax. When he touched the pier the pier with his hand he found that the wood had turned green as if it was a branch of a new grown tree. Then he met Guru Ji and told him the whole story. He said. “My Lord ! I have not seen such a miracle in my life. The hard wood has turned into wax. The cradle seems to be made of a herbaceous plant. Dry wood has been converted into candle of wax. How did this all come about?”
The Guru was very pleased to hear his words. He said, “It has happened due to the recitation of the holy hymns. When a person recites the ‘Gurbani’ from the core of his heart, then the dry plants turn into green plants. The child Harkrishan has been reciting the hymns sitting in the lap of God. He has been so engrossed in the name of God that he has forgotten about his surroundings.

Now he and God have become one, which is why the dry wood has changed to a large green plant. Prince Ram Rai on the other hand has been reciting the hymns in order to perform a routine discipline. He has not been concentrating on the Name of God. He is merely obliging a decorum, therefore his recitation has no effect on the wood. Now I hope that you may have got the answer to your question.”
Keeping in view of these two appraisals Sri Guru Har Rai Sahib Ji made up his mind to ordain Sri (Guru) Harkrishan Sahib Ji as the succeeding Guru. It was at the time when changed the hymns of Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji to appease the emperor Aurangzeb that Guru Ji had at once sent messages to his Sikhs to reach Kiratpur.

A large congregation gathered there. Guru Ji announced that he was going to leave this mortal world soon, so he had decided to offer the Guruship to Sri (Guru) Harkrishan Sahib Ji. When the congregation heard this news they felt very grieved. They were worried about the early departure of the Guru. He was at the time not more than thirty one years old. He was very young and Sri (Guru) Harkrishan Sahib Ji was mere five years old.

He addressed the congregation and said, In this world who ever comes, will have to leave it. Now Sir (Guru) Harkrishan Sahib Ji will be your Divine master. Though he is still a child, yet he is competent to lead Sikhs. Now you shall consider him as my form.” Then he got up from the throne and Sri (Guru) Harkrishan Sahib Ji was seated there. Then he asked the grandson of Baba budha Ji, Bhai Gurditta JI to complete the tradition of transformation of Guruship. Bhai Gurditta Ji placed five coins and a coconut before the Guru Harkrishan Sahib Ji and completed the ceremony of applying the coloured mark on the forehead. Then he bowed before the new Guru. After this the entire congregation bowed before hum turn by turn and Sri Guru Harkrishan Sahib Ji was installed as the eighth Guru.

Emperor Akbar remembered meeting with Guru Amar Das at Goindwal and subsquently Bhai Jetha who became Guru Ram Das. Akbar asked his courtiers to arrange a visit to meet Guru Ram Das whenever he travelled to Lahore next. So when Akbar travelled to Lahore to suppress the revolt of the Afgans he decided to meet Guru Ram Das at Amritsar.

When Akbar reached the Darbar Sahib he saw thousands of people attending the Guru to hear his holy sermons. Akbar wanted to test Guru Ram Das and after paying his respects he presented Guru Sahib with a big plate full of golden mohars. At that time his younger son (Guru) Arjan was sitting beside Guru Ram Das. The Guru asked Arjan to take the plate and to distribute the golden mohars to those in need.

(Guru) Arjan took the plate and distributed the mohars to the poor. Emperor Akbar was amazed to see such a humble act of the Guru. Later, Akbar was told that the Guru never keeps money with him, whatever offerings he receives he gives to the needy and poor. Akbar was convinced that Guru Ram Das was a great saint.

Emperor Akbar wanted to offer a Jagir of twelve villages for the maintenance of the langar but Guru Ram Das refused and said, “The langar does not depend upon Jagirs. Men fight with each other due to these Jagirs. These Jagirs are sources of evil passions, pride and ego. We only believe in one God and by the Name of God all creatures, continents, all worlds and spheres are sustained. God is Lord of this world and the next.”

Akbar was pleased to hear these words of the Guru, he told his courtiers that he had seen the embodiment of a living God.

LUDHIANA: Setting an example of communal harmony, a village of mostly Sikh population has donated land for construction of mosque and the community is even providing food to the workers working at the religious place. Gaggewal in Barnala district, which is around one and half kilometers from Nathowal village, last village of Ludhiana district, has ten Muslim families.

“We wanted to construct a mosque in the village but didn’t have land for the purpose. As a result, we had to say Namaz (prayers) at our homes. For Friday and Ramzan prayers, we would go to nearby Nathowal village which has a mosque. However seeing our problem, the majority community came forward and decided to give us common land of village for the construction of mosque,” said Saudagar Khan, a grocery store owner and a prominent young voice of Muslims in the village.

“The village has now given us 5 Biswa land for the mosque. With the active support of villagers including Sikh and Hindu brothers, we have started construction work of mosque around ten days ago. It will take us around six months to get the construction work completed. Already a mason and four labourers and many villagers are working for constructing the mosque which will be named as Mecca Madina Masjid”. He added that they have no words to thank the Sikh brotherhood for such a great gift and salute the communal harmony and inclusivity of Punjab which the state is known for.

A muslim, Mansa Khan, who is from adjoining village Nathowal in Ludhiana District, said that they were touched to see the brotherhood in the village.

“A group of community members went for the roof construction work of the mosque in the Gaggewal village and found that a villager Rajwinder Singh got food for all of us including the labourers working at the mosque site. Also we are happy that villagers are contributing for mosque irrespective of their religion which is a great symbol of communal harmony,” said Khan.
The Sikh community members are happy that mosque is coming up in the village.

Hargunpreet Singh, a villager who is helping in the construction, said that they are elated that mosque is coming up in the village. He added that they are helping in pious cause in all the possible ways and are involved in construction work as well.
Another villager Surjeet Singh said that the village has about 90% Sikh community members and is known for communal harmony and brotherhood.

One other thing you do here besides washing your hands and feet is cover you head, and I don’t actually know why we do this in the gurudwara but maybe someone can tell us in the comments. This is the place where the first Sikhs Guru, Guru Nanak Dev Ji, performed a miracle. The story is that he pushed an unmoveable rock out of the way of a river that was flowing down to a village below.” The New Zealander host goes on to show and explain what langar is.

As parts of Iraq are freed from the grip of the terror group ISIS, one Sikh man from Victoria decided to travel overseas to help people recover from the hardships they now face.

Boota Singh is in the northern part of Iraq for one week in Erbil, with the international humanitarian group Khalsa Aid Canada.

“Khalsa the word itself means a humanitarian word, anytime anybody needs help we go there to that community that country that people,” told Boota to CHEK News from Iraq.

“This organization started in 1999 and since then Khalsa aid international has helped people in Zambia, Greece, Iraq, india, bangledash, lebanon and hati and so many other countries”

He is visiting recently freed villages which were devastated under ISIS control and will help provide essential supplies to refugee camps, as well as meet with the Yezidis recently escaped or freed from ISIS-controlled areas.

“Its a place we have been going to since 2014,” said Jindi Singh, Victoria’s representative for Khalsa Aid Canada. “Boota is there with our CEO from the U.K. … we usually operate in the Kurd controlled areas of Iraq, they are a lot safer.”

“We try not to send things across international borders, just because that has a lot of issues and delays,” said Boota. “We try to go into the area and help the local economy, and purchase whatever needed and wherever we feel there is a gap we will try to fill that as best as possible.

“These people have been really living as slaves, and this is an attempt to empower themselves,” Jindi added.

But the trip is also dangerous but Singh, who became a Canadian citizen this year, says its worth the risk.

The situation was really heartbreaking and really needed help.

The group has been working in Iraq since 2014, and also has aid missions in Haiti, Lebanon, Turkey, India, Bangladesh and Zambia.
