Emperor Akbar remembered meeting with Guru Amar Das at Goindwal and subsquently Bhai Jetha who became Guru Ram Das. Akbar asked his courtiers to arrange a visit to meet Guru Ram Das whenever he travelled to Lahore next. So when Akbar travelled to Lahore to suppress the revolt of the Afgans he decided to meet Guru Ram Das at Amritsar.

When Akbar reached the Darbar Sahib he saw thousands of people attending the Guru to hear his holy sermons. Akbar wanted to test Guru Ram Das and after paying his respects he presented Guru Sahib with a big plate full of golden mohars. At that time his younger son (Guru) Arjan was sitting beside Guru Ram Das. The Guru asked Arjan to take the plate and to distribute the golden mohars to those in need.

(Guru) Arjan took the plate and distributed the mohars to the poor. Emperor Akbar was amazed to see such a humble act of the Guru. Later, Akbar was told that the Guru never keeps money with him, whatever offerings he receives he gives to the needy and poor. Akbar was convinced that Guru Ram Das was a great saint.

Emperor Akbar wanted to offer a Jagir of twelve villages for the maintenance of the langar but Guru Ram Das refused and said, “The langar does not depend upon Jagirs. Men fight with each other due to these Jagirs. These Jagirs are sources of evil passions, pride and ego. We only believe in one God and by the Name of God all creatures, continents, all worlds and spheres are sustained. God is Lord of this world and the next.”

Akbar was pleased to hear these words of the Guru, he told his courtiers that he had seen the embodiment of a living God.

LUDHIANA: Setting an example of communal harmony, a village of mostly Sikh population has donated land for construction of mosque and the community is even providing food to the workers working at the religious place. Gaggewal in Barnala district, which is around one and half kilometers from Nathowal village, last village of Ludhiana district, has ten Muslim families.

“We wanted to construct a mosque in the village but didn’t have land for the purpose. As a result, we had to say Namaz (prayers) at our homes. For Friday and Ramzan prayers, we would go to nearby Nathowal village which has a mosque. However seeing our problem, the majority community came forward and decided to give us common land of village for the construction of mosque,” said Saudagar Khan, a grocery store owner and a prominent young voice of Muslims in the village.

“The village has now given us 5 Biswa land for the mosque. With the active support of villagers including Sikh and Hindu brothers, we have started construction work of mosque around ten days ago. It will take us around six months to get the construction work completed. Already a mason and four labourers and many villagers are working for constructing the mosque which will be named as Mecca Madina Masjid”. He added that they have no words to thank the Sikh brotherhood for such a great gift and salute the communal harmony and inclusivity of Punjab which the state is known for.

A muslim, Mansa Khan, who is from adjoining village Nathowal in Ludhiana District, said that they were touched to see the brotherhood in the village.

“A group of community members went for the roof construction work of the mosque in the Gaggewal village and found that a villager Rajwinder Singh got food for all of us including the labourers working at the mosque site. Also we are happy that villagers are contributing for mosque irrespective of their religion which is a great symbol of communal harmony,” said Khan.
The Sikh community members are happy that mosque is coming up in the village.

Hargunpreet Singh, a villager who is helping in the construction, said that they are elated that mosque is coming up in the village. He added that they are helping in pious cause in all the possible ways and are involved in construction work as well.
Another villager Surjeet Singh said that the village has about 90% Sikh community members and is known for communal harmony and brotherhood.

“I am here at Gurduara Pathar Sahib and I’m here because I’m travelling with some Sikhs. One other thing you do here besides washing your hands and feet is cover you head, and I don’t actually know why we do this in the gurudwara but maybe someone can tell us in the comments. This is the place where the first Sikhs Guru, Guru Nanak Dev Ji, performed a miracle. The story is that he pushed an unmoveable rock out of the way of a river that was flowing down to a village below.” The New Zealander host goes on to show and explain what langar is.

As parts of Iraq are freed from the grip of the terror group ISIS, one Sikh man from Victoria decided to travel overseas to help people recover from the hardships they now face.

Boota Singh is in the northern part of Iraq for one week in Erbil, with the international humanitarian group Khalsa Aid Canada.

“Khalsa the word itself means a humanitarian word, anytime anybody needs help we go there to that community that country that people,” told Boota to CHEK News from Iraq.

“This organization started in 1999 and since then Khalsa aid international has helped people in Zambia, Greece, Iraq, india, bangledash, lebanon and hati and so many other countries”

He is visiting recently freed villages which were devastated under ISIS control and will help provide essential supplies to refugee camps, as well as meet with the Yezidis recently escaped or freed from ISIS-controlled areas.

“Its a place we have been going to since 2014,” said Jindi Singh, Victoria’s representative for Khalsa Aid Canada. “Boota is there with our CEO from the U.K. … we usually operate in the Kurd controlled areas of Iraq, they are a lot safer.”

“We try not to send things across international borders, just because that has a lot of issues and delays,” said Boota. “We try to go into the area and help the local economy, and purchase whatever needed and wherever we feel there is a gap we will try to fill that as best as possible.

“These people have been really living as slaves, and this is an attempt to empower themselves,” Jindi added.

But the trip is also dangerous but Singh, who became a Canadian citizen this year, says its worth the risk.

The situation was really heartbreaking and really needed help.

The group has been working in Iraq since 2014, and also has aid missions in Haiti, Lebanon, Turkey, India, Bangladesh and Zambia.

The story of Bhai Subeg Singh and Bhai Shahbaz Singh is a unique chapter from Sikh history. Bhai Subeg Singh was a denizen of village Jambar which was a few miles away from Lahore. Bhai Sahib was a true Gursikh who possessed a very high moral character and had high Sikh values. He was an elite scholar of Farsi.

He was a government official at the time of Khan Bahadur Zakaria Khan. He was a highly respected official as he possessed a very high moral character and was adept at his work. He was respected by the residents of Lahore and by the Governor Zakaria Khan.

Bhai Sahib made great efforts to unite the atrocious rulers of that time and the Singhs who were revolting against them. He tried hard to make their relations cordial. At many other instances also Bhai Sahib had done great favors to Zakaria Khan.

Bhai Sahib had a very obedient and very capable son, Shahbaz Singh. He was a very good looking and charming young man. He was taking the education of Farsi from a Qazi in a madrasa (school). Qazi Sahib was very impressed with the intellect and the very high moral character Shahbaz Singh possessed. Qazi wanted to convert Shahbaz Singh into a muslim and he had intentions of marrying his daughter to him. To accomplish his mission Qazi started inspiring him towards Islam by telling him the attributes of Islam but Shahbaz Singh was very proud of his Sikh faith and it’s rich heritage and history.

When Qazi was unsuccessful in his motives of converting him to a muslim even after trying for a long time he started threatening Shahbaz Singh. When Shahbaz Singh was not intimidated by his threatenings he complained to Zakaria Khan that he had used derogatory words for the muslim prophet Hazrat Mohammed Sahib and he also find faults in the religion of Islam. He instigated Zakaria Khan against Bhai Subeg Singh and Bhai Shahbaz Singh. Zakaria Khan forgot all the favors done by Bhai Subeg Singh and ordered the arrest of Bhai Subeg Singh and Bhai Shahbaz Singh.

Both were kept in different jails and were asked to abandon Sikhism and accept Islam. They were told if they do not accept Islam they will be given a very torturous death. Both father and son said we love Sikhi more than our lives. We can tolerate tortures but cannot part with our Sikh faith. The royal Qazi gave Fatwa that both father and son should be killed in front of each other and on opposite wheels.

They were tied tightly on opposite wheels. The wheels were rotated. The sharp knives tied to the wheels pierced the bodies of both Singhs and tore them apart. The blood started oozing from the bodies of the Singhs. The wheels were stopped in between and they were asked again if they accept Islam and their answer was we will never abandon our Sikhi and we will never accept Islam. The wheels were rotated again. Both Singhs kept on reciting Gurbani and their consciousness was immersed in their Guru. They faced the hour of great adversity and torture with great courage. They happily accepted martyrdom for their Sikh faith with great valor

Their life is an impeccable example of their immense and profound love and respect for their Guru and their Sikh faith. Their love for Sikhi was above and beyond this world. They lived for Sikhi and died for Sikhi. Such is the life and the precious treasure trove of Gursikhs.

This is an inspiring tale of supreme sacrifice and inspirational martyrdom. KARNAIL SINGH BENIPAL- THE Unsung Hero –the Unsung Martyr!

A young man of 25, who braved bullet on his chest to free Goa from the Portuguese yoke.

Born ON 9TH September, 1930 in the Isru village of the Punjab to S. Sunder Singh and Harnam Kaur, Karnail lost his father at the age of 7. His mother and older brother brought him up with love and care. He had four sisters and three brothers.

At a young age, Shaheed Bhagat Singh, Shaheed Udham Singh, Shaheed Kartar Singh Sarabha and Lala Lajpat Rai proved to be his inspiration. As he walked to his school 12 kms every day, young Karnail recited revolutionary songs in the evening, collected village children and staged skits on great Indian martyrs and gave revolutionary speeches.

In college too, later he was quite a student leader. Simultaneously, he took up a job as a primary school teacher to meet his college expenses and also worked at a shop as he came from a poor economic background. He took up leadership of teachers’ strike too. He became a member of the CPI in Punjab.

His pet song was “AMRIKA MAAN HAI ATOM TE, UNAN NOON MAAN TABBEEBAN TE, KASHMIR NOOR MAAN SUDHARTA TE, PUNJAB NOOR MAAN SHAHEEDAN TE”

Goa was then under the Portuguese rule. Goa Vimochan Sahayak Samiti was found in Pune in 1955 to liberate Goa. The GVSS gave a clarion call to all Indians to participate in Goa’s freedom struggle. Pandit Kishori Lal, Vishnu Pant Chitale inspired young Karnail to join Goa’s freedom movement and he enrolled himself as a Satyagrahi to liberate Goa in 1955.

Huge processions of Satyagrahis began to march towards the Goa border. One such procession was led by a young widow from Madhya Pradesh Smt. Sahodaradevi Rai Sagar carrying our Indian flag in her hand. Chitale, Oak, Karnail were in this procession.

As this procession reached Patradevi, a village in Goa on the northern border in the Pednem taluka, the Portuguese ordered firing on the unarmed Satyagrahis. One bullet hit Sahodaradevi’s arm and she collapsed with the flag.

Karnail Singh was at the rear of the procession. He saw this cowardly act of the Portuguese firing at Sahodaradevi. He rushed forward and tore his shirt and challenged the Portuguese to shoot at him if they had the guts instead of firing at an unarmed lady. He had rushed and shouldered Chitale from the bullet.

The Portuguese shot him on his chest and the 25 year old brave gutsy lion called Karnail Singh fell down with his eyes open.

This brave young lion had sacrificed his young life to free Goa from colonialism. His wife Charanjeet Kaur never married again. She lives in Ambala in Haryana.

We have forgotten him. We need to celebrate this Great Hero of our freedom struggle. I feel a chapter on him in school text book is a must. We have started ‘Mission Karnail’.

As a first step, his half bust, made by Sachin Magde free of cost, is being installed at Patradevi primary school on 15th August 2015 at 10 am.

Long live Shaheed Karnail Singh!

Meet Gurtej Sandhu. He has lived in Boise for 29 years. And he has racked up 1,299 U.S. patents by the latest count. The seventh-most of anyone. In the world. In all time.

Gurtej Singh Sandhu was born in London to parents from India. He studied electrical engineering in India before coming to the United States to pursue a doctorate in physics at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Sandhu was interested in integrated circuits — electronic circuits formed on a small piece of semiconducting material. As his graduate study neared its end in 1989, his technical skills were in demand. He weighed two job offers. One came from Texas Instruments, then the top American computer-memory maker. The other came from Micron Technology, an 11-year-old upstart in Boise struggling against government-subsidized memory-chip makers in Japan and other countries.

“Micron, which was No. 18 on the list of (memory) companies, their vision was to be No. 1 in the world,” he said. He liked that. But he worried that Micron would fail.

Starting a new life

A professor encouraged him. You’ll be put in a box at Texas Instruments because you lack experience, the professor told him, but at Micron you’ll have freedom to solve all kinds of engineering problems. And even if Micron fails, you can still get another job.

So he joined Micron. In Boise, he worked to sustain something called Moore’s Law. In 1965, Intel cofounder Gordon Moore observed that the number of transistors on a unit of area in an integrated circuit was doubling every year. Sandhu found ways to cram more memory cells onto chips and make them more efficient. He racked up patent after patent.

Micron would own those patents, but Sandhu — and, frequently, colleagues with whom he collaborated — would receive credit for them and share $1,000 bonuses (now $2,000) for each one.

Moore’s Law was a trend, not a law of physics. As memory cells on chips kept shrinking, engineers reached the point where they could no longer fit more zeroes and ones onto flat chips. Sandhu began to focus on stacking layers of two-dimensional memory atop one another. Stacking, still a work in progress, demands new processes to make it effective and affordable.

“The technical complexity of what we need to do today is exponentially more difficult” than it was when he started, Sandhu said.

As Micron has fostered closer ties with Boise State University, Sandhu has played a key role. For 15 years, he has mentored engineering majors and faculty alike.

“He has tremendous humility, in particular given the scale of impact that he’s had,” said Will Hughes, director of the university’s Micron School of Materials Science and Engineering. “And he has his finger on the pulse of emerging technology and emerging memory on the global scale.”

Hughes adds: “He’s deeply committed to his family and friends.” Sandhu and his wife, Sukesh, raised two sons: Gureet, a Boise State graduate who works at Boise’s Albertsons Cos. buying candy from the grocer’s suppliers (and who DJs at Boise’s Revolution Concert House); and Sunny, who works in Australia.

Micron’s big Boise change

When Sandhu arrived in Idaho, Micron made most of its chips in fabrication plants, or fabs, on its Boise campus. As the 1990s passed into the 2000s, time began to pass those fabs by. Micron closed the last of them in 2009. A company that employed 12,000 people in Boise a decade earlier had fewer than 5,000 left.

Under successive CEOs, the Boise campus has shifted from a manufacturing center to a research hub. Once a big employer of mostly manufacturing workers, Micron in Boise today is a smaller employer of highly paid engineers and scientists, roughly half of whom Sandhu said come from abroad. (Though, with 6,800 Boise workers including administrative, support and other personnel, Micron still employs more Idahoans than any other for-profit employer.)

The Boise campus still has fabs, but they’re for research and development; only a few of their cutting-edge chips are sold to customers. Chips for sale are made in Virginia, Utah and Asia.

“There’s been a huge change since I joined,” Sandhu said.

Sandhu said being an immigrant in Boise comes with challenges. American-born citizens sometimes think he’s Arab. He once asked a group of students to guess where he was from; one said Japan. The U.S. is more insular than other nations, he said: “Today, if I’m in Belgium, even the janitors know, ‘Yeah, you’re from India and you’re Sikh.”

After 9/11, a woman in Boise saw him driving his black SUV, wearing his turban, a symbol of his faith. She called the police. Nothing came of the call, Sandhu said. In some countries, he said, such a report may have led to intimidation or extortion. He laughed about the incident with colleagues and still finds the story amusing.

“The reality is there is no place in the world, no society, where a minority does not feel uncomfortable,” he said. “But I’ll tell you: Today, the best place for any minority to live in any society is the United States. … In terms of basic fairness, still, there’s nothing matching this country.” It’s not always easy for Micron to lure nonwhite immigrants to mostly white Boise, he said. Once they come, though, “they stay here for the rest of their lives.”

And Micron is stable now.

Two-thirds of the 20 makers of dynamic random-access memory in 1995 are now out of the business, and just three — Micron and its bigger Korean rivals, Samsung and SK Hynix — account for 95 percent of the global DRAM market. Brutal competition and big price swings have given way to an oligopoly and less-volatile prices, contributing to record Micron sales and profits.

Sandhu sees that as cause for celebration. He notes that Micron’s past competitors were usually government-subsidized, while Micron was not.

“All our lives we’ve waited for this to happen,” he said. “Our game plan was: If we hang on long enough and keep competing, maybe there will be three left, and once there are only three left, you have a big enough market, big enough profit margins,” he said. “I pinch myself.”

With the rise of artificial intelligence, self-driving vehicles, large-scale data processing and the Internet of Things, the world’s memory needs will only grow. For Sandhu, that means more patents.

“A few years ago I passed Edison, right? So people started making noise,” he said. While he doesn’t compare himself to Edison as an inventor, he does like to see processes he patented used by other people, in their computers and portable devices.

“That’s my reward,” he said: “Sitting in Boise, Idaho, and working for Micron, and everybody in the world is using your patent, using things you came up with.”
