Thousands of devotees across the US turned out for the Nagar Kirtan (35th Sikh Parade) to mark the anniversary of the coronation of Guru Granth Sahib, the holy scripture of Sikhs at Yuba City in California on Sunday.

Led by the Panj Pyaras (five Sikh clerics), the religious parade was taken out about 125 miles from the San Francisco Bay Area.

Yuba City has developed into a trading and service centre. The city is known for having a sizeable Sikh community.

Yuba City Nagar Kirtan draws over 100,000 Sikhs from around North America.

Each year, on the first Sunday of November, Sikhs from the United States, Canada, India, the United Kingdom and the rest of the world commemorate the receiving of the Guru Granth Sahib in 1708 by the Sikhs.

At the gurdwara, built in 1969 on the 500th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak, Sikh devotees thronged in large numbers to pay their obeisance to the Sri Guru Granth Sahib, while displaying their political, social and economic strength in the states.

Tajinder Singh Dosanjh, a senior member of the committee, said over 85,000 devotees from US and other countries had assembled for the parade. He said it helps people to meet each other and offers a platform to Sikhs to discuss their issues.

Flower petals were spread all around from a helicopter hovering above ceremonial dais and the path of the parade. The devotees attended a free Langar (community kitchen) on the roadside. Many US Congressmen attended the parade.

Dr Pritpal Singh, coordinator American Gurdwara Parbhandhak Committee, said that such a gathering not only showed the Sikh community’s social bonding, but also demonstrated its political and economic strength in the state.

Sikhs leaders said such gatherings help to spread awareness about the achievements of the community in the United States, especially after the Wisconsin Gurdwara killings.

The World Sikh Organization of Canada has helped Master Seaman Wanda McDonald become the first Sikh woman to wear the turban while serving in the Royal Canadian Navy (RCN).

McDonald, a Sonar operator based out of Halifax, Nova Scotia, joined the RCN in 1997 and became interested in the Sikh faith three years ago. After deciding to become an initiated or Amritdhari Sikh, she requested permission to wear the turban on duty.

The Canadian Forces now allow both Sikh men and women to wear turbans and the Sikh articles of faith while serving.

McDonald has now been given permission and has begun to wear her turban full time while on duty. She said today, “as the first Sikh woman in the Royal Canadian Navy to be approved to serve while wearing a turban, I feel fortunate to be given this opportunity. Military service is a very rewarding career, and I hope that my example will inspire other Canadian Sikh women to follow this path; to be able serve their country without worrying about having to compromise their identity as a Sikh. “

84′ Riots Victim – Attar Kaur’s Son Gurdial Singh, a pass out from Akal Academy Baru Sahib has gone for Legal Studies to UK

Know More to the most heart-touching struggle of her strong-headed mother, Attar Kaur, bruised by the blemishes of Sikh Massacre’84

Winter 1984 had shattered the life of Attar Kaur into pieces which rendered her hopeless. Collecting the miseries of her tragic life, she gathered courage and strength to start afresh but during this while, she lost her husband and their source of livelihood. The family plummeted from middle-class status to being homeless and penniless.

The rioters mercilessly killed her husband Kirpal Singh, his electronic shop was pillaged.

Attar was dawned on with harsh realities of life being the sole caretaker of her seven children—four sons and three daughters—and her mother-in-law. One of them was just a month old. Yet she decided to fight by, refusing to be swamped by fate. She stitched clothes in a factory, cooked and cleaned as a maid in the nearby kothis and worked for 25 years in a government school in Janakpuri as ‘a water woman’, serving water to kids.

The minute details of her life illustrate what she endured all her life.

“Every day, I travelled by DTC to a sewing factory in Naraina where I worked from 9.30am to 5.30pm for Rs 250 a month. A gurdwara committee gave us another Rs 250 every month. That’s all we had to run the kitchen,” says Attar, now in her sixties.
The state of her children was her utmost concern. Her eldest son, thrashed by the rioters, had undergone a heart surgery. She recalls two of her other sons were saved by a Muslim neighbour, who quickly chopped off their hair.

She knew Tilak Vihar wasn’t the best place to bring up kids and was scared by the fact how other boys in the neighbourhood often strayed to the wild side and lost their way to drugs; even life. She did not want her kids to fall in this trap.

By God’s grace, nobody in the family took to drugs and her concerns were eased partially after a Sikh forum sent two of her sons to Baru Sahib in Himachal Pradesh giving a her a new ray of hope. Her younger son, Gurdial Singh, a pass out Akal Academy, Baru Sahib added a pride moment to the painful history of his family.

He is currently doing a course in legal affairs in the United Kingdom. Hope still floats for the family.

The bitter memories of 1984 still make her cry. She recalls making countless visits to Karkardooma court. It makes her inconsolable that the testimonies came to nothing.
