ਦਸਤਾਰਬੰਦੀ ਮੁਕਾਬਲੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਪਹਿਲੀ ਤੋਂ ਪੰਜਵੀਂ ਕਲਾਸ ਦੇ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ 40 ਬੱਚਿਆ ਨੇ ਇਸ ਮੁਕਾਬਲੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਭਾਗ ਲਿਆ ਜਿਸ ਵਿੱਚ ਜਗਰੂਪ ਸਿੰਘ ਅਤੇ ਕਿਰਤਬੀਰ ਕੋਰ ਨੇ ਪਹਿਲੇ ਸਥਾਨ ਤੇ, ਚਾਹਤਦੀਪ ਸਿੰਘ ਦੂਸਰੇ ਸਥਾਨ ਤੇ ਅਤੇ ਲਵਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਸਿੰਘ, ਲਵਕੀਰਤ ਸਿੰਘ ਨੇ ਸਾਂਝੇ ਰੂਪ ਵਿੱਚ ਤੀਸਰਾ ਸਥਾਨ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕੀਤਾ।

पाकिस्तान के साथ 1965 की लड़ाई में वायुसेना का नेतृत्व करने वाले भारतीय वायुसेना के मार्शल अर्जन सिंह 97 वर्ष के हो चुके हैं। वह इस समय देश के इकलौते फाइव-स्टार सैन्य अधिकारी हैं।

न जाने कितने ही युद्ध देख चुके अर्जन सिंह की आंखें आज भी वैसे ही चमकती हैं, जैसे पहला युद्ध लड़ रहे किसी जवान का। जब अधिकारियों, साथियों और अन्य लोगों से मिलते हैं तो वही गर्मजोशी और आत्मविश्वास रहता है, जैसे अभी भी रगों में दुश्मन के छक्के छुड़ा देने का हौसला नस-नस में भरा हो।

मार्शल अर्जन सिंह अजेय रहे। उनकी कूटनीति और रणनीति से वायुसेना को कभी हार का मुंह नही देखना पड़ा। किसान-पुत्र होने के कारण उनको देश की मिट्टी से यह प्रेम ही था, जो मात्र 19 वर्ष की उम्र में उन्हें आरएएफ क्रैनवेल में एम्पायर पायलट प्रशिक्षण पाठ्यक्रम के लिए चुन लिया गया। और फिर उन्होंने कभी पीछे मुड़ कर नही देखा। उन्होंने अपनी उड़ान के साथ भारतीय वायुसेना को उस शिखर पर पहुंचाया की आज वह नौजवानो के लिए मिसाल बन चुके हैं।

देश में पांच स्टार वाले तीन सैन्य अधिकारी रहे हैं, जिनमें से फील्ड मार्शल सैम मानेकशॉ और फील्ड मार्शल के एम करियप्पा अब जीवित नहीं हैं। भारतीय सेनाओं के ग्रैंड-ओल्ड मैन कहे जाने वाले और मार्शल ऑफ एयरफोर्स, अर्जन सिंह के सम्मान में पश्चिम बंगाल के पानागढ़ एयरबेस को ‘अर्जन सिंह एयरबेस’ नाम दिया गया है।

अनुशासन को अपना अंग मानने वाले मार्शल अर्जन सिंह खुद के चार सिद्धांत हैं। उनका मानना है कि इनको अमल कर के एक आदर्श व्यक्ति बना जा सकता है। अर्जन सिंह कहते हैंः

“अपने पेशे के प्रति ईमानदार रहो अपने कार्य का निवर्हन इस तरह करो कि सभी उससे संतुष्ट हों, साथ में अपने अधीनस्थ पर विश्वास रखो और आख़िरी लक्ष्य हासिल करने के लिए ईमानदार और गंभीर प्रयास करो। अगर इन सिद्धांतों पर आप चलते हैं तो आप कभी भी ज़िंदगी में गलती नहीं कर सकते।”

मार्शल अर्जन सिंह का जन्म 15 अप्रैल 1919 को लायलपुर (अभी फैसलाबाद,पाकिस्तान) में हुआ था और उन्होंने अपनी शिक्षा मोंटगोमरी (अभी साहिवाल, पाकिस्तान) में पूरी की। वह 19 वर्ष की उम्र में पायलट ट्रेनिंग कोर्स के लिए चुने गए। वर्ष 1944 में उन्होंने अराकन अभियान और इमफाल अभियान में स्कवाड्रन लीडर के तौर पर अपने स्कवाड्रन का नेतृत्व किया। उनके कुशल नेतृत्व के लिए उन्हें विशिष्ट फ्लाइंग क्रॉस से सम्मानित किया गया। आजादी के दिन 15 अगस्त 1947 को मार्शल ने वायु सेना के सौ से भी अधिक विमानों के लाल किले के उपर से फ्लाई -पास्ट का भी नेतृत्व किया।

वायु सेना प्रमुख बनाए जाने के समय उनकी उम्र बमुश्किल 44 साल थी और आजादी के बाद पहली बार लडाई में उतरी भारतीय वायुसेना की कमान उनके ही हाथ में थी। अपने कुशल नेतृत्व और दृढता के साथ स्थिति का सामना करते हुए भारत की विजय में महत्वपूर्ण भूमिका निभाने वाले मार्शल की प्रशंसा करते हुए तत्कालीन रक्षा मंत्री वाई बी चव्हाण ने कहा थाः

“एयर मार्शल अर्जन सिंह हीरा हैं, वह अपने काम में दक्ष और दृढ़ होने के साथ सक्षम नेतृत्व के धनी हैं।“

विंग कमांडर बनने के बाद वह रॉयल स्टाफ कॉलेज ब्रिटेन में प्रशिक्षण के लिए गए। ग्रुप कैप्टन के तौर पर उन्होंने अंबाला क्षेत्र की कमान संभाली। एयर कमोडोर बनने के बाद उन्हें एक संचालन बेस का प्रमुख बनाया गया, जो बाद में पश्चिमी वायु कमान के नाम से जाना गया। चीन के साथ 1962 की लडाई के बाद 1963 में उन्हें वायु सेना उप प्रमुख बनाया गया।

एक अगस्त 1964 को जब वायु सेना अपने आप को नई चुनौतियों के लिए तैयार कर रही थी, उस समय एयर मार्शल के रूप में अर्जन सिंह को इसकी कमान सौंपी गई। वह पहले ऐसे वायु सेना प्रमुख हैं, जिन्होंने इस पद पर पहुंचने तक विमान उड़ाना नहीं छोड़ा था और अपने कार्यकाल के अंत तक वह विमान उड़ाते रहे। अपने कई दशकों के करियर में उन्होंने 60 प्रकार के विमान उड़ाए, जिनमें द्वितीय विश्व युद्ध से पहले के तथा बाद में समसामयिक विमानों के साथ-साथ परिवहन विमान भी शामिल हैं।

पाकिस्तान के खिलाफ लडाई में उनकी भूमिका के बाद वायु सेना प्रमुख के रैंक को बढाकर पहली बार एयर चीफ मार्शल किया गया। उन्हें नागरिक सम्मान पद्म विभूषण से भी सम्मानित किया गया। सेवानिवृत होने पर उन्हें स्विटजरलैंड का राजदूत बनाया गया। वायु सेना में उनकी सेवाओं के लिए सरकार ने उन्हें जनवरी 2002 में वायु सेना के मार्शल के रैंक से नवाजा। यह उपलब्धि पाने वाले वह वायु सेना के एक मात्र अधिकारी हैं।

Ranjit Singh Rarru is using his life savings to operate a free food service for anyone in need. He lost his job two years ago, but has kept busy giving free food to those in need at the Guru Nanaks Free Food Langar on Victoria Street.

For the past year, Singh has been serving out of this location after his rental property was being used as a front to sell alcohol. “That really hurt me,” he said.

Since then, Singh took back the location and now has served thousands of people with a service that’s expanded to run three days per week. “It’s beautiful, all these souls that come here because the soul is what everybody is after, it’s not ego, it’s just we’re lost in money and everything else,” Singh said. “These souls come here and use the service of God, and you go to happily serve them, it doesn’t matter who it is.”

Singh’s friend, Deanna Borgstad says she’s been in need before and when she heard about the efforts to feed the community, she was simply inspired. “It’s humbling, it changes you, it changes who you are inside when you take the time to give for no reason, just give, because you want to see somebody else happy.”

But Singh isn’t just helping people in the local community. He has expanded his delivery of fruit twice a week to eight elementary schools in Prince George. Toby Young has been volunteering with Singh and says it’s incredible just how much “Ranjit spent his savings, his entire money on helping others and that’s what truly moved me, was that it’s all selfless service for him.”

Singh says it’s not about the money, but rather, it’s about helping others and asking for nothing in return. “There has to be not even a bit of you, no I, no me, it’s all Him and once that ego disappears you can feel the bliss all the time.”

The principal Mrs. Simran Kaur Thind after welcoming the chief guest; grandparents, children and teachers led the visitor towards the school playground area where plantation was done. As per the guidelines of The Kalgidhar Trust, this year selected fruit saplings were planted comprising of mango, pomegranate, papaya, guava, jack fruit, lemon, neem etc. More than 300 saplings were planted with the help of assembled volunteers. The Eco Club of the school played a key role in motivating children and grand parents to make this day great.

A signature campaign on the occasion was also conducted by the school. The chief guest, parents, and teachers wrote their messages and slogans to make this day unforgettable. The soldier inside him is still alive. “I never feared, though had a close shave with death several times during the World War II and 1947-48 Indo-Pak conflict.

He is said to have saved the lives of 116 Muslims at Karanpur village in Pinjore when riots broke out after the Partition in 1947. “Villagers wanted to kill Muslim men and violate their women. But I resisted and succeeded,” he says.

He had a gun and gave shelter to Muslims in his house for over a month.

He got late in joining back to unit by 45 days but when he told the reason he was honoured. “Families which migrated to Pakistan later also kept coming to meet him,” said Rajinder Singh, eldest son of Sarup Singh.

Once 45 of his colleagues died but not a single pellet touched him in Java (Indonesia) in World War II.

Lawyer Harmeet Kaur Dhillon shares the meaning of ‘Ardaas’ at the RNC.

Harmeet opened the second night of the Republican National Convention by singing the invocation in Punjabi and then translating it into English.

It’s a first for the RNC. But it’s not the first time the 47-year-old San Francisco lawyer has upended expectations.

Born in Chandigarh, India, she emigrated with her parents to England and then to the Bronx, N.Y. Her father, an orthopedic surgeon, soon moved the family to rural Smithfield in central North Carolina.

“I had two long braids and a funny name and my mother didn’t dress me in fashionable clothes. I was not popular at all,” said Dhillon.

“Please give us the courage to make the right choices, to make common cause with those with whom we disagree, for the greater good of our nation,” she told the delegates.

She was raised as a devout Sikh. “I had a very religious upbringing at home. That was very central to my life from day one,” she recalled.

Dhillon attended Dartmouth College, where she wrote for the college’s conservative paper, the Dartmouth Review, and ultimately was named editor.

* From the time when Guru Gobind Singh came to Damdama Sahib, Baba ji was responsible for the distribution of the Guru Granth Sahib to other parts of the world and was the “head granthi” (head priest) of Damdama Sahib in Bathinda.

* He spent about 8 years and learned Gurmukhi from Bhai Mani Singh along with horse riding, archery as well as other arms training.

* Met Guru Gobind Singh at Damdama sahib where Guru Ji asked him to start preaching Sikhism. Later became head “Granthi” at Damdama Sahib.

* Between 1705 and 1728, Baba Deep Singh and Bhai Mani Singh produced a number of hand written copies of the Guru Granth Sahib.

* Fought in various wars – In about 1709, Baba Deep Singh Ji joined Banda Singh Bahadur to fight in the battle of Sirhind

* Baba Deep Singh was also a survivor of the Chotta Ghalughara (Small Holocaust) in 1755 when 10,000 Sikhs were killed.

*On the outskirts of Amritsar, Baba ji and a group of heavily outnumbered Sikhs fought two fierce battles against a Mughal force of 20,000. In the second engagement Baba Deep Singh in the course of battle was beheaded, but having vowed to die in the precincts of the Golden Temple. He kept his promise by continuing after picking up his head and carrying it on his palm, whilst continuing to fight. He then left for Sach Khand with his severed head resting on the parkarma of Harimander Sahib on 13 November 1757.

Big – HEARTED Sikh Bikers refine HUMANITY & bring a Ray of Hope to Cancer Victims!

A group of Sikh bikers with big hearts hope that their cross-country ride to fight childhood cancers will pave the way for a new generation of caring.

Twenty-four members of the Sikh Motorcycle Club rolled into Surrey Sunday night, two weeks after departing for their journey to raise awareness about the devastating diseases.

On 13 bikes, the members rode a total of 12,000 kilometres – about 1,200 per day – through B.C., Alberta, Manitoba, Ontario and Quebec, before turning around in Montreal.

Their donations to the Canadian Cancer Society will surpass $100,000 – far exceeding their initial goal of $60,000.
Along the way, the bikers met community members and appeared on local TV and radio stations to share their journey.

“Every city they went to the Sikh community, the non-Sikh communities, everyone was cooperative of them,” said club founder Harjinder Singh Thind.

“It was a safe trip, no accidents, no trouble on the motorcycles, everything was fine.”

It wasn’t all smooth sailing, however. Along the Prairies the group hit a patch of nasty storms. But the inclement weather, including hail and thunderstorms, didn’t deter them from their mission.

“We thought about those kids that are in need that need that money and so that gave us energy and we kept fighting through it,” said rider Charnjit Dhadda.

“A lot of guys were sticking their thumbs up, clapping, even when it was raining. So that was a big boost.”
The ride is a partnership with the Canadian Cancer Foundation, and the funds will be used for research and prevention for pediatric cancers and also children currently undergoing cancer treatments.

Allan Mugford, the agency’s regional director for the Fraser Valley, said they were “stunned and amazed” by the fundraising effort.

“This is a totally committed and passionate group of community members,” he told CTV Vancouver.

Beyond fighting childhood cancers, the riders had another mission: bringing communities together, and Thind believes they’ve done just that.

“The main purpose of this club was to build a bridge between the mainstream community and us – that the Sikh next door living here is one of us. And so we were able to make that a success,” he said.
