Canada’s Top 25 Environmentalists Under 25 for 2018.- Sukhmeet Singh

Sukhmeet’s commitment to the environment became evident when he travelled to the Arctic and lived in Inuvik, Northwest Territories for six months. While he was 200 km above the Arctic Circle, Sukhmeet taught biology, physics, and environmental sciences to Indigenous youth at a local high school.

With a background in science, he explored the effects that climate change will have on human health. Upon meeting with Indigenous elders, Sukhmeet learned how climate change will impact the livelihood of the Inuit population living up North. When he listened to stories from these elders, he learned the true significance of how crucial it is to keep our environment in check.

Because of this change in the livelihood of the Indigenous population living in the North, Sukhmeet explored the impact this would have on their mental health. Specifically, this would result in solastalgia or the feeling of being away from home even when you are at home. With mental health already being a major concern in the North, this would exacerbate the situation.
Thus, Sukhmeet co-created Break The Divide to connect youth in the North to youth in southern Canada to explore the topics of climate change and its effects on mental health. By personifying the effects of environmental degradation in the Arctic, Indigenous youth can teach other youth about these risks so that they can work together to think of solutions.

Sukhmeet was instrumental in starting a Break The Divide chapter in Inuvik. He conducted focus groups with students to ensure that this idea would be sustainable and something that the community would benefit from. Since its implementation, there have been many video calls between students in Inuvik, Northwest Territories and students in Delta, British Columbia.

For his great work, Sukhmeet was awarded a scholarship by the Vancouver Foundation and the Michaëlle Jean Foundation called the 2017 Fresh Voices Relationship with Indigenous People in Canada Award.

Due to the success of Break The Divide, Sukhmeet has been recently selected as one of 1,000 leaders from around the world to represent Canada and travel to Singapore for the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals Conference. Here, he will discuss the positive impact that Break The Divide is having on the mental health of youth and how it is raising awareness about climate change.

Sukhmeet also served as his school’s BC Hydro School Ambassador. He worked on energy audits and planned initiatives to create a more environmentally-conscious school.
He also created the Surrey Youth Sustainability Network with a group of his friends to bring together youth from all secondary schools in the Surrey School District.
Currently, he is also working with a few of his professors from Western University to publish academic papers on the impact of climate change on the mental health of Inuit populations in the Arctic.

5000 Kms /9 States/ 8 Months – Biggest Participatory Walk ever in India’s History for FARMERS

To help the family members of Indian farmers who committed suicides, founder of Nomadic Lion David Atthowe undertook a 6,000 km walk from Kanyakumari to Amritsar to raise funds for ‘Rescue a Family’ project under the banner of ‘Walk of Joy India.’

27-year-old David, a UK national, says that, “We want to provide the farmers’ widows with Rs 1,000 as pension per month for a long term while educating them on better farming practices. We want to help them develop new skills and develop employment opportunities and ensure that the children are not forced into work at an early age and to make sure they can still complete their education.”

David began the walk on July 15 and intended to complete it in 12 months here, covering 14 states.

Nomadic Lion initiated the walk in partnership with the United Sikhs and The Better India.

He added that ‘Walk of Joy’ would be the biggest participatory walk ever in the history of India to reach out to millions of people around the country with a positive message. “

‘Million Smiles’ was a campaign to share simple, everyday moments of happiness and joy. “The goal is to share one million smiles and positive stories from around the globe,”

He said in the last two decades more than three lakh farmers had committed suicides in India, leaving behind widows and children, who were left to survive without a father or a husband. “There are many reasons for suicides but it is generally agreed that the problems begin as a result of the so-called Green Revolution, which was the intensification of agriculture in India.

The idea was that only high yields were important while environment and sustainability were of little significance. This meant use of lots of pesticides, fertilisers, and water. The short-term results showed greatly improved yields but the long-term results, however, have been disastrous,” he quipped.

Sikh Youth of BC Celebrate ‘Sant Teja Singh Ji Day’

Past this weekend, the Sikh youth paid tribute to a Saint Scholar, Principal/Sant Teja Singh (MA LLB Am Harvard), founder of Kalgidhar Trust, Baru Sahib.

A three day program was organized, to remember the first Ambassador of Sikhism to the Western Hemisphere. Sant Teja Singh Ji established the KhalsaDiwan Society and had successfully proved to the Canadian government that all the Sikhs are highly capable people (When Govt. was planning to send all Sikhs to Honduras)of constantly contributing to the economy. Teja Singh Ji had a vision for the future of Sikhs in Canada and had laid out the foundation for us to carry his legacy forward.

The event spanned over three days, starting on Friday June 29th with the Akhand path Arambh in the morning and in the evening there was a Katha Darbar hosting Bhai Gurvinder Singh Ludhiane Wale, GianiSurinder Singh and Bhai Mehtaab Singh who presented in English. On Saturday evening there was a Dhadhi Darbarfeaturing Gaini Pritpal Singh Bains, Gaini Milkha S Mauji, and Gaini Surjit S Varas.

The main event was July 1st, SantTeja Singh Day, with the Akhand path Bhog in the morning followed by Gurmat Samagam and then a conference on Teja Singh from 11am to 2 pm. The Conference at Gurdwara Sukh Sagar New Westminster, was highlighted by Dr. Khem S Gill, Vice-President The Kalgidhar Trust/Society (former Vice Chancellor of Punjab Agricultural University) and special appearances by Prof. Gurvinder S Dhaliwal, S. BhagwanSingh Johal (India), Dr. Sarbjit S Virk Head Seattle Chapter Baru Sahib and Bhai Paneet Singh (Canada).

The speakers spoke about Sant Teja Singh Ji’s legacy and contributions to the South Asian Community in Canada. The event was attended by many people from all over lower mainland. The event was enjoyed by the Sangat, with an opportunity to view a special exhibition on Sant Teja Singh Ji, hosted by the volunteers of Akal Academy. The exhibition on Sant Teja Singh Ji, shed light on the lasting contribution to the sangat of the lower mainland during his mission to the west in the early 1900’s.

Guru Gobind Singh Ji was sitting in the congregation with Sangat. He had a stone with him and a bucket full of water. He threw the stone into the bucket and the stone sunk to the bottom. He then asked the Sangat why the stone sunk?

One person said that it sunk because it was a stone … a stone always sinks. But Guru Ji again asked why is it that the stone sunk? Another person from the Sangat responded that it was going to sink because it is heavy … a heavy object will always sink in water. Guru Sahib Ji responded that this was not the right answer.

He kept asking people about the right answer. No-one had a clue – they could not overcome their scientific way of thinking.

Finally, Guru Gobind Singh Ji turned to Bhai Nand Lal Ji. Bhai Nand Lal Ji was sitting at the bottom of Guru Ji’s Takhat, and as soon as Guru Ji asked him, Bhai Nand Lal Ji started crying. Guru Ji said “Nand Lal, why are you crying? Give an answer to my question.”

Bhai Nand Lal Ji responded, “when the stone was with you, it was afloat in this world. When the stone left you, it sunk.” Guru Gobind Singh Ji was very happy with Bhai Nand Lal Ji and gave him a tight embrace.

Guru Ji gave this as an example of what happens to us when we leave the Guru. When we leave the True Guru, we all sink. When we stay with the Guru, Guru Sahib carries us across the Ocean to the almighty.

One day, a Sikh appeared before Guru Gobind Singh Ji at Anandpur. He did not bring any offering for Guru Sahib. This was something unusual for a Sikh. he said to Guru Sahib, ‘O true king, pardon me for coming empty-handed. All the same, i want to make an offering to you. I am sure […]

I am sure you will like it. but it is too heavy. i have not been able to lift it and bring it to this place.’ Guru Sahib inquired, ‘what is it? where is it?’ The Sikh replied, ‘ Away in the forest, i came across a big tiger. i killed it. i should have brought its body to you as an offering. but, as i have said, it is too heavy. I am not strong enough to lift it and bring it to you. Be pleased to lend me suitable assistance.’

The guru sent some strong men with the sikh. they brought the tiger’s body and placed it before the guru. He was pleased to see it. He praised the sikh for his bravery. He then got the tiger’s body skinned. Then he sent for a potter’s donkey. He got that donkey clothed in the tiger’s ckin. The donkey thus, dressed as a tiger, was let loose. All animals ran away from it out of fear. even men, women and children fled on seeing it approach. The donkey in the tiger’s grab enjoyed the new experience. It had no longer to carry any loads. it had no longer to obey any master. It was free to run about and feed at pleasure.

This went on for some time. in the meantime several complaints were made to the guru. several people requested him to kill or get killed the dreadful beast. In response to these complaints and requests the guru went out to shoot that ‘Dreadful beast’. He took a party of Sikhs with him. The hunting party approached the donkey in the tiger’s grab, raising the usual shouts and cries. On hearing the noise made by the guru’s party, the supposed tiger began to bray in terror. it ran away at top speed. the hunting party allowed it to go away unchecked and unpursued. It fled for protection to its old master. it was trembling with fear. Its behavior and movements were not at all like those of a tiger. They were those of a donkey. The potter was puzzled to see a tiger behave and move like a donkey. ‘what is the matter with this tiger?’ he said to himself. He approached it cautiously. AS he did so, the supposed tiger began to bray and move its tail

The potter realized that the animal before him was not a tiger. it was only in a donkey in a tiger’s skin. He was greatly amused at this discovery. He had a hearty laugh. Then he said ‘ so, my lost donkey has come back in the tiger’s suit. But its a donkey all the same. come on , my dear, i shall make you apear in your true grab. You have enjoyed quite a long holiday. i have missed you very much these days. now you have become stronger. so the loads will be heavier than before’.

Saying this, the potter took off the tiger’s skin from the donkey’s body. then he gave it a sound beating for having run away. He then employed it in carrying loads. The loads were much heavier now.

All who heard the story were greatly amused. they said to each other,’So we were all deceived. it was only a donkey dressed as a tiger. Yet how dreadful it looked! if it had continue to wear the tiger’s skin, it would have continued to terrify us all.’

Some Sikhs asked the guru what he meant by what he had done. The guru replied,’I want you to learn a lasting lesson from this. As long as you were bound by castes and other Hindu beliefs and customs, you were like donkeys. You were driven about by persons of no position or power. I have freed you from all those chains. I have conferred on you worldly powers and blessings. I have clothed you in the grab of tigers. I have given you the courage and bravery of lions. I have a made you superior to your neighbors. I have given you the Khalsa uniform. I have made you my Singhs or lions. Stick and cling to that uniform of five ‘Ks’. don’t ever discard it.Remember what happened to the potter’s donkey. when it wore the tiger’s grab, it looked like a tiger. It was in fact, taken to be a tiger by all who saw it. Nobody could go near it or think of using it as a beast of burden. But when the tiger skin was taken off, it was caught and beaten by the potter. If it had not preserved and brayed like a donkey, it would have been still been regarded and treated as a tiger.

‘You should learn a lesson from this. You must have not only the appreance of tigers, or lions. youshould also posses the qualities befitting your aprearance. this you can do by taking the amrit introduced by me and by following the Rehat prescribed by me for the Khalsa. An amritdhari sikh or a singh of mine will have the exterior as well as the interior of the king of the animal world. As long as you, will preserve that exterior, your enemies will fear you. You will be always victorious. But if you part with this exterior, if you discard the khalsa uniform, you will again revert to your original condition. You will fall from the lofty position to which i am lifting you.

“Yes, Guru Nanak’s Sikhs should, henceforth take the baptismal nectar- Amrit – as prescribed by me. They should ever keep distinct from others in charater and conduct, as well as in appearance. So long as the Sikhs preserve the form and appearance that i have given them, so long will they enjoy my blessings. they will have in them my spirit and my light.

Bhai Nand Lal Ji’s Unconditional Love for Guru Gobind Singh Ji

Bhai Nand Lal Ji as always brought Guru Gobind Singh Ji’s langar, prepared with his own hands… Guru Sahib would sit and enjoy this food daily, Bhai Nand Lal Ji noticed that Guru Sahib would always leave a tiny morsel of their food, only enough for one bite. He would then open the nearby window, where a small dog would bark for food. Guru Sahib would throw the dog this tiny burki of food.

Bhai Nand Lal Ji would look at this – Guru Ji and his love for this Dog and smile amazed, thinking “This Dog has such amazing Karam, he gets to eat left over food from the most amazing, most perfect human, the form of our Lord himself – this Dog is truly a blessed dog, I can only hope for karam like his”

Guru Sahib, the knower of all smiled.

The next day the process was repeated, Bhai Nand Lal Ji again, brought Guru Sahib langar and Guru Sahib, as always left a little morsel for the barking dog. Watching this, Bhai Nand Lal Ji had an idea…

The following day, before bringing Guru Ji langar, Bhai Nand Lal Ji took the dog home. At his abode, he fed the dog the richest of foods, he fed him til his stomach could take no more. Content that the Dog was full, Bhai Nand Lal Ji returned the dog outside the window of Guru Sahib. He then returned home and prepared Langar for Guru Sahib.

That day, Guru Sahib enjoyed the langar to the full, as they ate, Bhai Nand Lal Ji took up their position, beside the dog outside the window – thinking, this was his chance. He too, could possibly have the luck of this dog, and taste that tiny morsel that had also touched the lips of the tenth Human form of Vaheguru.

As Bhai Nand Lal Ji sat awaiting patiently, Guru Sahib continued to enjoy their food. Eventually, Bhai Nand Lal Ji’s wait came to an end as Guru Ji opened the window on time.

Bhai Nand Lal Ji looked up, still hiding behind the dog and watched, waiting to be fed like a King with this tiny bite from Guru Sahib’s own food.

Guru Sahib, knower of all hearts, began to talk. “Nand Lal” they said, “Today the food you made was exquisite, like never before… I had to eat it all – today no burki was saved for you Nand Lal”

Bhai Nand Lal Ji’s eyes filled with tears… as his heart broke into a million pieces… he stood up from beside the dog and with tear filled eyes asked Guru Sahib, “Guru Ji, i am so unfortunate that this dog has better karam then me – every day I’ve watched you use to spare even the smallest bite for him, yet this one day, my destiny is such that you cannot offer me the same treatment” Bhai Nand Lal Ji was almost inconsolable, til Guru Sahib pulled him towards them, and held him close.

“Nand Lal, don’t ever think your destiny is bad – you’ve not received a morsel of food I may have left but Nand Lal, you’re a part of my heart – nothing can change those karam of yours, no morsel of food.”

Bhai Nand Lal Ji wept in Guru Ji’s arms, as Guru Ji held their ‘brother’ close…

Bhai Nand Lal Ji’s love for Guru Sahib was worth learning and sharing with others!

To Pay tribute to a true Sikh Sevadaar, the Sikh Youth of BC Celebrate Sant Teja Singh Day (Canada Day) each year on July 1st at Khalsa Diwan Society, Gurdwara Sukh Sagar, New Westminster. This year’s program will begin on Friday, June 29 with an Akhand Path Aramb at 9.00am and conclude with Bhog Akhand Path, Kirtan/Katha and Speakers and Presentation on July 1.

The great Sant Teja Singh was a true Sikh Sevadaar and the first Ambassador of Sikhism to the western Hemisphere. He was also the founder of first Sikh Gurdwara’s in Canada, USA and UK was a charismatic personality.

His seven years sojourn in the West spanned from 1906-1913. Historians’ account of his contribution is sketchy and skewed. In his twenties, his academic achievements were stupendous. A man of his ability, intelligence, and erudition at a tender age could have risen to legendary eminence during his time. Very few would get opportunities that he had at the start of his career as administrative head, civil servant, and the educational leader of one of the best institutions of his time.

Similarly, he had many prospects to excel in the West. But he was a class apart. He had no ambition for his personal success after he was touched profoundly by a seer who had considerable following in Punjab.

His submission to his spiritual guide was complete and unselfish. His master gave him a mission that ranged from organizing the community to – enshrining freedom, peace and spiritual poise in their lives. He transferred community wisdom to them that gave them a rare courage to face unique challenges in their social and political life. Sant Teja Singh’s name is associated with First Sikh Gurdwaras in England, Canada and United States of America.

Sant Attar Singh, a renowned saint of Mastuana, sent him to the western world with a message that there was nothing in occult and ridhi sidhis. Swamis from India were swarming the whole western world at that time with claims to supernatural powers by psychical and magical means. They were urging westerners to get absolute lordship of world by acquisition of mystic power to subjugate others through ancient mantras.

Sant Teja Singh gave a different message to the world that nothing was higher than the hard work, honest living and devotion to the creator. It is very important to know the multidimensional life of such a unique personality

Life of Sant Teja Singh Ji is a model of transformation of a highly educated, immaculate rationalist into a pious spiritually enlightened ideal man – a Perfect Gur Sikh (God-conscious person, Gurmukh)’. He was blessed with this remarkable change by following the path of Prema Bhagti (losing oneself in the Eternal Divine by meditation on His Name) of Guru Nanak Dev Ji under the spiritual guidance of Sant Attar Singh Ji, Gur Sagar Sahib Mustuana in District Sangrur of Punjab, India. His life would continue to serve as beacon of light to all those interested in uplift and service of humanity without any distinction of caste, creed, race or color.

Sant Teja Singh, whose given name was Niranjan Singh, was born to mother Sada Kaur and father medical Doctor Ralla Singh at Bolowali in Gujranwala District, Panjab, India on May 14, 1877. The village is located in the vicinity of Eminabad (Saidpur Pathana), where Guru Nanak Dev Ji blessed a carpenter Bhai Lalo,; shook pride of the headman of the area Malik Bhago, and guided him to give up oppressing the poor so that the Divine Name finds a place in thy heart.; and where the Guru, seeing the world ablaze in the fire of jealousy, greed, and selfishness performed austerities determined to pray for them and try some how to find a cure for their ills.

Light shall again come from the east

During his visit to Chicago, Sant Teja Singh met Rev. Jenkins Lloyd Jones, Lord Bishop of the largest Unitarian Church of Chicago, who was a pious learned and highly respected person. After a brief introduction, Sant Teja Singh Ji and Rev. Jones exchanged views on various aspects of spiritualism. Sant Ji explained the sacred mission of Guru Nanak dev Ji for attaining the world peace. At this point, Rev. Jones got up from his chair, warmly shook hands with Sant Ji and with love exclaimed, “Brother Teja Singh, Light shall again come from the East. We in the West are quite unfit for it.” He also invited Sant Ji to participate in the Congress of free Christianity and Religious Progress at Berlin in August, 1910.
